Two years ago residents of Glovertown took it upon themselves to
initiate the development of a museum. Their vision included a facility that would highlight important aspects of the development of Glovertown since resettlement began and people were still living on the islands. A volunteer committee was formed to create the Glovertown Museum Association. Through hard work and dedication, as well as the cooperation of many residents, the Janes House Museum has just celebrated its Official Opening in July 2004.
The Janes House, built by Ambrose and Sarah Janes in 1898 was donated by the Janes family several years ago for the purpose of housing a museum. It is one of the oldest structures in Glovertown and was constructed using many of the original building techniques that are no longer in use today. The museum staff would be glad to tell visitors about the unique features of this remarkable house.
The Janes House Museum was developed with the theme of resettlement in mind, which is the story of people's movement from the Islands of Bonavista Bay to 'Growth Centers' such as Glovertown. Other related themes include:
There are also many other features of the museum including old pictures of Glovertown, pictures of the resettled islands, pictures of boats and boatbuilders, a display of boatbuilding tools, old items and tools relevant to resettlement days, a bedroom setting from the early 1950's, a gift shop and a heritage boat exhibit.
